Very sad to hear that Paul Mariner has lost a battle with brain cancer at the tender age of 68. He was very much one of my footballing heroes in the 1980s. He was a great player, gent and role model. His was the goal that propelled England to the 1982 World Cup in Spain where he had a great tournament. He really should have been picked more often by Ron Greenwood for England. In terms of playing style, he's very reminiscent of Patrick Bamford. I can still rhyme off the names of that Ipswich side - Paul Cooper, Mick Mills, Terry Butcher, Russell Osman, George Burley, Franz Thijssen, Arnold Muhran, John Wark, Eric Gates, Alan Brazil and Mariner. I can't do the same for the league winning Villa team of 1981. Anyway, I'm glad I got to see him play. RIP Paul.

Looking a lot like covid got him. He was anti vax, anti mask, hugged people, had asthma, had underlying health conditions.
